A happy marriage plus a good night's sleep equals happiness?

Host - Government studies tell us that the key to happiness is a good marriage and a good night's sleep.

Nina - Yes, this is also interesting. Some of the survey findings reveal that married people are happier and a good night's sleep really does promote our well-being and our contentment, but some other findings that come out of it is people who are promoting their well-being are people who are involved in activities such as gardening, praying, regular walks and also socialising, even if it just means talking to your neighbour across the fence.

Host - So going the other end of the spectrum, what about if you were going through a divorce, you're unhappy in your married life, or if you're single and you're unhappy and you don't get a good night's sleep - does that sort of take you the other way?

Nina - Yes. What this particular survey does go on to suggest is that there are also some factors that have the opposite effect, so certainly some of the things that you've mentioned, and other things like being dumped or getting the sack - those kinds of things aren't going to help. But interestingly enough, from this survey, how this has actually come about is because all the government parties are now wanting to go beyond financial measures of happiness when they put together their policy targets. So all these kinds of things are coming into consideration in terms of how do we promote well-being and contentment.
