Presenter - Let's have a look at some of the items that have been in the news recently about fitness, because there's always an awful lot - especially at this time of year, after Christmas. So we saw one saying that higher physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer.
Lucy - Yes. It's a well-known fact that having a healthy lifestyle can reduce the chances of suffering from a disease, cancer being one of them, and there are many reasons. You see, what people fail to recognise sometimes is that exercise has so many benefits; it isn't just about weight loss, it aids in our digestion, so that's very good for preventing colon cancer.
Presenter - Colon cancer?
Lucy - Colon cancer yes, and also breast cancer for women. It's essential that we exercise because it really improves our immune system, and actually the stronger our immune system is, then the less likely we are to get cancer, and if someone does have it, it's really important to fight it as well.
Presenter - To stay fit... also, it makes you stay very positive doesn't it and gives you the "happy chemicals" in your brain, which must help if you're fighting something like breast cancer.
Lucy - And actually, people don't realise that if we're stressed - and in this day and age, let's face it, so many of us are - that has a really negative effect on the body and again that effects the immune system, so exercising makes us feel positive and stronger and more confident. There's been much research recently showing that women who have exercised three to four times a week have reduced their risk of getting breast cancer.
